The gabion mesh is a cage, basket, or box filled with rocks, stone, sand and soil for use in civil engineering, road building, military applications and landscaping and so on. Because of the special environment, the rust resistance is important. There are different surface treatment: hot-dipped galvanized, PVC coated. If necessary, the raw material can be stainless steel wire.
The service life of gabion mesh depends on the lifespan of the material wire, not on the contents of the box. If the wire is damaged, the whole structure also will fail. Galvanized steel wire is most common material in the application, but PVC-coated and stainless steel wire are also used. PVC-coated and hot-dipped galvanized gabion mesh have been estimated to survive for 50 years.
